According to the Turkish Interior Ministry, 528 people were detained in 38 different cities between January 4 and February 4 in relation with the Bogazici University protests.11 protesters were arrested and 24 people were sentenced to home detention with ankle monitors. The protesters had initially started demonstrating again the appointment of a new rector close to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Bogazici University, contrary to what used to be an election process. More protests followed after strong condemning reactions by conservatives and radical groups against an LGBT event which featured an image of the Muslim's holy site the Kaaba, took place at the university on 29 January.
