epa09024083 A man stands among shacks in a slum in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, 19 February 2021. The rate of urbanization of Cote d'Ivoire in 2007 was around 47.02 per cent, whereas it was only 12.70 per cent in 1960 at independence, which shows that this rate has more than tripled in less than fifty years. According to a study by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in 2000, this figure would have reached 55.7 per cent by 2015 and projected to reach 57 per cent ?in 2018, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS). This phenomenon of urbanization is a concern for urban space managers and actors of local development, in that it generates many problems, including the proliferation of precarious neighborhoods and slums.
