Descriere: epa08873805 Sri Lankan health workers carry a coffin of an unclaimed Covid-19 related victim to the crematorium at the public cemetery in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 10 December 2020. With the wave of Covid-19 claiming a total of 144 lives up to the evening of 09 December, the government decided to cremate some 20 unclaimed bodies lying at the Judicial Medical Officer’s mortuary in Colombo after confirmation by the Attorney General that the action was in keeping with Sri Lanka's quarantine regulations. Earlier, on 01 December a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court ruled in favour of dismissing 11 Fundamental Rights petitions filed by individuals and organisations seeking an order nullifying the gazette notification on the cremation of bodies of those who died due to Covid-19. Some relatives of victims cited the expenses of around Sri Lankan Rupees 60,000 to 70,000 (266 to 10 euros) reportedly charged for the coffins and cremation for their inability to remove the bodies, while some from Muslim religious communities refused to do so claiming that Islam does not allow cremation of bodies.
