The dam ran dry as a result of what locals are calling the worst drought in a thousand years. A close by town named Aberdeen has it residents saying they can not remember when it last rained. Since the main supply dam outside the town, the Nqweba Dam, ran dry, the town had to rely on boreholes for its water supply. But the boreholes only yielded enough water for 80 percent of the nearly 40,000 people in the town. The drought has seriously affected the local population as well as the production of sheep as farmers are loosing their livestock due to the lack of water.
