The South African Police and City of Cape Town Metro police used tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse hundreds who had started to mark out plots on the open land and begin building. Residents cite overcrowding and a fear of Covid-19 contamination in the overcrowded informal settlements as the reason for seeking land onto which they wanted to build new shacks.
