epa08258451 Spanish Scientific Research Center (CSIC) PhD student Maria Dulsat works at the laboratory of the CSIC's Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA) in Barcelona, Spain (issued on 29 February 2020). More than four decades after Spain banned the use of the dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) insecticide in 1977 for its potential hazard to public health and biodiversity, its persistence in nature continues to threaten bird populations. DDT was used massively in agriculture between the 1960s-80s and its residues can remain embedded in soil for a prolonged period of time. IDAEA researchers are working on a pioneering project that involves sampling, detecting and analyzing this pollutant with a great environmental impact. EPA/MARTA PEREZ
