Descriere: epa07926656 Catalonia's Mossos d'Esquadra anti-riot police (top) face protesters during riots against the Spanish Supreme Court's ruling of multiple jail terms for pro-independence leaders, in Girona, Spain, late 16 October 2019 (issued 17 October 2019). Spain witnessed an escalation of violence after the Supreme Court announced the 'process' ruling of prison terms against the Catalan political leaders accused of organizing the Catalan illegal referendum held in 2017. The Spanish Supreme Court on 14 October 2019 issued a fresh European arrest warrant for deposed former President of the Government of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, following its sentencing of former Catalan Vice President Oriol Junqueras to 13 years in jail for sedition and misuse of public funds. Several other political leaders were also handed prison sentences for their roles in holding a failed independence vote. Several rallies called 'Marches for Freedom' left the towns of Girona, Vic, Berga, Tarrega and Tarragona to arrive to Barcelona on 18 October 2019. EPA/DAVID BORRAT
