Descriere: epa06503677 Lieutenant colonel Djordje Ivanov looks at wartime pictures of the full size models of the MiG 29 fighter jet aircraft on display at the Aeronautical Museum in Belgrade, Serbia, 07 February 2018. In 1999, during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, Yugoslav army pilot and artist Djordje Ivanov had the idea to use the 'Trojan horse' tactic and swap the real MiG-29 fighter jets while they were on the ground with full scale models. The Yugoslav Airforce calculated that they would have seven minutes between recognizance flights and the actual airstrike so they used the time to make the swap. After a scale model was hit the actual airplane would lift of. Models were covered in sheets of aluminum to create a radar reflection and had details like real radio system in the plane’s cockpit. To create a heat signal they built two horizontal furnaces in the engine positions. The first scale model was destroyed only a couple of hours after it was set up on the Batajnica military airport near Belgrade. Only one full size model of the MiG-29 was not completely destroyed during the bombing. It was restored and is now on show in the permanent collection of the Belgrade’s Aeronautical Museum.
