Descriere: epa08576549 An electric battery assisted bicycle is parked on a wall in Lagos, Nigeria 26 July 2020 (issued 31 July 2020). The earliest origins of the bicycle can be traced back to 1817 when German Baron Karl von Drais made the first major development creating a steerable two-wheeled machine. From Kenya to Zimbabwe, South Africa to Nigeria, and Liberia, bicycles are used by millions of Africans. One of the world’s simplest yet most profound inventions is in daily use across the continent for the transport of goods, commuting, health and fitness, and a host of other uses. With the advent of cheap motorcycles, the bicycle has in many countries been overtaken by its powered two-wheeled cousin as the major form of transport. Yet due to its low running cost and ability to use without the need for fuel, the bicycle remains one of Africa’s most used and loved machines.
